Are you tired?

Jesus said, "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly." Matthew 11:28-30 (The Message)

For those of us who follow the Lord Jesus, we know He is 'gentle and humble in heart' as other translations render it. He never forces us to do anything and He waits to be invited into our lives. As we study the Gospels, we observe His perfect character, represented by the fine flour of the grain offering (Leviticus 2:1). When people object to Christianity nowadays, it is never because of the character of Christ. What possible objection could be raised to this beautiful, perfect Son of God, who was the personification of love and holiness!

Many are searching for the kind of life Jesus promises in Matthew 11, but sadly in the wrong places. Who does not want inner peace, love, grace, rest? The One who conquered death bids us come to Him for life. This will not exclude trials of life and suffering, but we shall overcome these difficulties because He has overcome the world (John 16:33). He offers salvation to the one who realizes he cannot save himself. We can never merit salvation nor be accepted by God on our own terms, therefore it was necessary for Jesus to atone for our sins on the cross. No wonder that scene was clothed in darkness for three hours! What a terrible price to pay! Let's leave our pride at the foot of Golgotha today and repent. Salvation is a free gift and vital for the life to come. The joy of knowing we are children of God is greater than anything this world can offer us. Thank you, Yeshua.

The Mystery that is Macedonia

When I first came to Macedonia on a visit in 2001, I found this little country so intriguing and breathtakingly beautiful that I happily accepted the invitation to return for a longer period. That ‘longer period’ has now extended itself to several years during which I have had many enriching, memorable experiences. I thought it might be interesting to jot down a few observations about the difference in culture. I appeal to my Macedonian readers not to misunderstand my intentions. What I have observed are customs and habits which are as normal to you as breathing and sleeping, but to someone from an entirely different culture, they are both interesting and noteworthy. It is always thrilling for me to explore how various nations function and it is nothing short of a privilege to experience a foreign culture first-hand. Hospitality Macedonians are a friendly, hospitable people. I do not know how many times they have almost literally killed me with kindness. Indeed, I have often...

Is Belief In God Blind Faith?

Stephen Hawking famously said: There is no heaven or afterlife for broken-down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark. Comparing the human brain to a computer, he firmly declared his atheistic stance. Dr John Lennox’s reply to this statement turned it on its head: Atheism is a fairy story for people afraid of the light! Who has the correct perception? Are we just living in a sphere of darkness without God or can we find evidence for God’s light and creatorial power? Evidence for God’s existence The order and design of creation. This is the most compelling sign in my opinion. I cannot look at the beauty and detail of creation without marvelling at the Creator. In the 1980s theoretical biologist, Dr Hans Meinhardt, began to wonder how the beautiful patterns of shells formed. As he researched, he discovered that the rules which govern the formation of the patterns in nature such as leaf arrangements, sand dunes and snowflakes, were the s...

The Sacrifice of Thanksgiving

I will offer to You the sacrifice of thanksgiving and will call upon the name of the LORD . Psalm 116:17 As I read this verse this morning, I asked myself, ‘what exactly is the sacrifice of thanksgiving?’ Why is it called a 'sacrifice'? Sometimes when we really want to understand the meaning of a word, it is useful to look at the etymology. ‘Sacrifice’ comes from the Latin sacer (sacred, holy) and facio (do, make). The word seems to have taken on the meaning in English of costing something and while that is true, perhaps the original meaning has more significance in terms of presenting an offering to God. Our sacrifice of thanksgiving is to be holy, sacred, from a pure heart.  Old Testament sacrifices were offered with fire. Perhaps I can extend the imagery to the presence of the Holy Spirit. He is the One who makes our sacrifices holy. The rest of Psalm 116 gives expression to the reason for this sacrifice of thanksgiving. The Psalmist recalls   answered praye r (v ...
